Storms Causes Influx of Roof Repairs in Edmonton - Some Tips for Next Storm

It's that time of year again! Last Friday (July 25, 2013) seen wind and rain so bad in the Capital City that roof shingles were blowing off, flat roofs were flooding, and even flights were cancelled at the Edmonton International Airport.

Our switchboard lit up and the phones didn't stop ringing for 16 hours straight and our Edmonton roof repair crews were going solid for days with roof repairs, skylight repairs, shingles blowing off, and flat roof drains plugging and causing leaks in buildings.

We do our best to get the word out on social media to prepare people in advance of rain storms, high winds, and in the winter warning of snow loads, ice dams, roof ventilation, and potential roof collapse. But, folks are busy and they tend to deal with disaster only when it strikes.

Here's Some Tips for the Next Rain Storm:

Water Ponding - Flat Roof Drain Plugged
1. Clean out all gutters in advance and after the rain storm.Gutters will back up and cause leaks in to your house.
2. Be sure your gutter extensions are pointing away from your house and down grade away from your basement. Water will get in and leak in to your basement.
3. If you have a flat roof, BE SURE to clear all scupper drains, internal drains, and anything that is designed to drain or shed water off your flat roof. A flat roof can become a tub of water very quickly and collapse a building quite easily. Check the drains before the storm, during the storm if it lasts for many hours, and after the storm.
4. If you have a metal or shake roof, do not walk on it while it is wet. Shake and metal that is wet is like walking on ice on a slope.
5. If you are using a ladder, do not attempt to go on the roof with-out a friend present. Tie off the ladder with a chord to the gutter anchor or something near. Do not go on the roof when there is lightening present.
6. If you are in a commercial building that has a flat roof that has parapet walls of any sort and the roof is not draining and you cannot figure out how to get it to drain quickly (in flash storm) you need to get people out of the building before it collapse. Same goes for your house of course. In the event you cannot get the drains working you can use pumps but you need to be sure the pumps are keeping up. You can also call us and our crews will pump the water off the roof.

Here's Some Tips for when you need Roof Snow Removal:

Roof Snow and Ice Removal

Most often you want to leave roof snow removal to the professionals. However, if you absolutely want to give it a try then the following may help:
1. Never get on a roof with-out a friend present.
2. Tie off your ladder. Use a harness and tie off.
3. Use a snow rake from the ground when possible or to the point possible. Many times this will help a lot or enough with easing snow load weight and preventing ice dams.
4. When shoveling the snow off the roof be sure nobody is below that you can hurt. Your friend can be your spotter.
5. When shoveling the snow and ice be sure not to damage the shingles or flat roof membrane.
6. If you have a metal or a shake roof be extra cautious because they are extremely slippery in the winter.
7. Regularly removing the snow from your roof will avoid roof collapse and will avoid ice damming because the snow won't melt and freeze and thaw again in a cycle causing ice to form.

Here's Some Tips for when Ice Dam Removal is required:

Roof Ice Dam

1. The best tip I can offer is to leave roof ice removal to the professionals. Every year there are reports of injury and deaths because homeowners attempted to do it themselves.
2. I also suggest you review the list of tips at this link for preventing roof ice damming and it also covers "Roof and Attic Ventilation, Moisture, Roof Ice Dam and Snow Removal, Roof Leaks, and Condensation".
3. Remove the snow from your roof regularly. This will avoid melting snow from creating ice dams.
4. Heat wire cables hardly work - unless they are industrial hard wired heat trace installed in a commercial or industrial building. Residential heat wires can be more aggravation than they are worth.
5. The use of salt socks, pellets, and the like hardly work if at all. They are a waste of money also.
6. What does work is removing snow regularly, checking the intake soffit area of your attic to be sure insulation isn't plugging air intake to keep airflow in your attic, be sure your vapour barrier isn't compromised, and be sure you have enough venting out the ridge and that the vents are not plugged with snow.

This time of year it is important to keep up on roof snow removal and check for ice damming issues on your roof.

The snow loads on roofs in the Edmonton area, most specifically on flat and commercial roof systems has triggered our office to issue a snow load weight load advisory. If you have a flat roof either on your residence or commercial building in the Edmonton, Alberta area you should immediately remove the snow and any ice that you can. Snow load levels on roof systems are very near 2011 levels when a number of roof systems collapsed.

The article below from our main blog describes the process of roof snow removal, ice dam removal, and maintenance to flat roof systems.
